Wardrobe Details: New Look

newlook9

This post has been in my draft folder for a while. You can even see the trees in the background had yet to fully bloom and my hair was in desperate need of a haircut; apologies for the frizz! It seemed only yesterday when we took these photographs though; how fast is this year passing? We’re nearly in August folks! Anyhoo, we’re now good to go and I’ve teamed up with my friends at New Look to share their Fashion Flashback Timeline, exploring style throughout the decades.

My favourite style decade is a close call between the 60s and 90s. I grew up in the 90s and loved the days of distressed denim, flannel shirts and grungy Dr. Martens. However, being in my thirties, I’m now drawn towards the effortless style of 60s icons Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot, or more particularly the Beatnik look.

You don’t have to wear a beret and turtlenecks to achieve the look, essentially the Beatnik style (late 50s and early 60s) is black tight-fitting black cropped trousers (Cigarette or Capri pants), plain/Breton tops and flat shoes; which pretty much sums up the type of clothing I like to wear anyway. Don’t get me wrong I love other 60s styles (hello bold prints and shift dresses) but there’s something about this look that is so effortless and easy, that I’m naturally drawn to.  I’m a big fan of effortless fashion!

I think if I teamed my outfit below with a 60s hair do and ALL the eyeliner then it would look more Hepburnesque but one of the best things about incorporating throwback trends into your daily outfits is picking out just a few key elements to suit your style and your current wardrobe.

I love these Black Polka Dot High Waisted Trousers (now only £10). As a size 14, high-waisted trousers are the perfect style for me and I love how this design adds a touch of personality to a simple black outfit.

During the summer turtleneck tops aren’t the most practical of tops to wear, but I do like this everyday Rib Jumper (£8.99) as an alternative. This would look great with a colourful mid-length swing skirt and flats.

These simple black loafers (£27.99) are a great addition to any casual 60s outfit; think Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face!

Then accessorise the look with an oversized tote bag (£24.99), sunglasses, and team with colourful nail polish and red lipstick for a playful nod to the colourful 60s style you see later in the decade.

What’s your favourite style decade?
