At Home: Mother’s Day with Anthropologie

With Mother’s Day only just around the corner (Sunday 15th March) some of us are looking for inspiring gifts to remind our mum’s how much we care.

My mum has had a pretty rough time of late with both my dad and herself being ill, not quite the retirement they both envisaged (even more reason to live in the present). So when then the beautiful Anthropologie asked to me to choose something that reminded me of my mum and the interests and quirks we share, it was a lovely reminder to focus on what is important and what makes us both happy.

Me and my mum are both dreamers. I can remember so many occasions she took me for walks in Haworth down to the Brontë Falls and imagined we were in a scene from Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre. I reckon my love affair for period dramas (and their leading men!) came from my mum too. Have you seen the recent advert for Poldark on BBC1? Well, I remember watching the original programme (borrowed VHS from my nan) years ago with my mum and dreaming of bygone eras, and the dramatic Cornwall coast. Talking of leading men, we also both share a fondness for the northern scoundrel that is Sean Bean, especially in Sharpe and Lady Chatterley’s Lover. Oo-er missus. Oh and Aragorn in Lord of the Rings. Oh, and Daniel Day-Lewis in The Last of the Mohicans. Long friendships are made from mutual man crushes!

Mum cares about her home and garden so much, and you’ll always find her tending weeds and adding random accessories to the garden (fairies alert!). Now we have our own home, my thoughts have turned to our outdoor space and I can’t wait to begin potting plants, hopefully with the help of my mum. Happy distractions, my friends. In the meantime, I’m focusing on herbs for our windowsill using this gorgeous earthenware window planter. Isn’t it stunning?

Our final trait that we most definitely share is our ability to be happy in our own company; we are introverts and very independent. Dad has worked nights all my life so mum either had to learn to enjoy her own company at night, and during the day when he slept, or perhaps she was already comfortable with it in the first place. All I know is that like mum, I’m happy too in my own company, knowing that my lovely OH is by my side as we both do our own thing. Thinking about it, my nanna lived alone for around 30 years after my grandad passed away and was ridiculously independent too, so I think it’s something we all share and I’m proud of that.

In the evenings while dad was at work, I’d pop down from my bedroom and we’d share numerous tea breaks (Yorkshire Tea, milk, one sugar) and we’d both always leave half a cup. I’ve no idea why neither of us can finish a full cup of tea, but I’ve noticed mum has started to ask for half a cup now as if she’s just realised! Which is why I choose these stunning cup and saucers and tea towels, to celebrate all the cups of tea we’ve shared and the period dramas we’ve devoured together. They’re the perfect size for little tea drinkers like us and the most beautiful tea cups I’ve ever seen. And look at those tea towels!

Thank you for reminding me of all the similarities we share, Anthropologie. I’m off to give her a call…
