At Home: Bathroom Makeover with Tile Mountain

I’m so pleased to be finally sharing photographs of our new bathroom (I’m being very polite here, I’m ruddy elated). Like a lot of folk, it takes time to save pennies for home improvements, which makes you really appreciate it when the work is done. So for the last week I’ve been skipping into our finished bathroom with a smile on my face and stroking the new tiles at any given moment. I can see this bathroom glee lasting a while.

We had some help from my friends at Tile Mountain who provided us with the floor and wall tiles for our bathroom makeover and I couldn’t be happier with the finished look. Our bathroom is quite small and although the bathroom suite itself was fine, the previous vinyl flooring and wall tiles weren’t really to our taste. It turned out the previous owners did a lot of bad DIY in the bathroom and consequently left us with the fallout (crumbling walls and uneven floors with holes in).

The bathroom has a window but the old dark coloured flooring, broken skirting boards and light grey wall tiles made the space feel really dull. We always made the best of it decorating with bathroom accessories and plants (years of practice when we were renters) but a new, more invested look was well overdue.

For the flooring we chose the Marrakech Bellisa Silver 4 Pattern Floor Tile to add some Mediterranean Style and interest. Ladies and gents, I’m besotted. The dark grey/blue Moroccan-style pattern adds a fresh and eye-catching feel to our now calm and relaxing bathroom but is also practical for those muddy paws too! You can buy mix and match tiles from this range to create different patterns, depending on the size of your room. For our small space I chose this one design, I can’t tell you how great it feels to walk on actual porcelain tiles rather than vinyl flooring. In a small space at £16.99 per square metre, I think they are brilliant value that adds a luxurious and fresh feel to the space.

For the walls I’d been coveting the Metro tiles for a long time but I wanted this iconic design to fit naturally in our space (less like a public toilet) so I chose these white metro tiles with white grout. To make it easier to clean and for a more finished look, the tiles were fitted to the floor (no skirting board!). I love how they complement the floor tiles (this design is very versatile), in creating a modern yet timeless aesthetic.

The rest was simple. To give the room a relaxed and cosy feel I added natural textures of wood and decorated with plants. Any time I makeover a room I make sure I look within the house first for suitable accessories that I can swap from room to room. For example, our Habitat lantern candle that once lived in the bedroom, then lounge now has taken residence in the bathroom. And the JYSK hanging basket that was in the bedroom, now acts as storage for the bathroom (hanging from the back of the door).

Bit by bit, we’ll add more plants once we see how the Ivy, Aloe Vera and Ferns does in here. Oh and of course I treated the bathroom to a new luxury hand wash (only £4.99 from TK Maxx) and a candle too (from local florist Fleur De Lys) for all the long lazy baths I have planned this Christmas.

What do you think? It’s a real treat in the winter to walk into a fresh and calm space and enjoy a hot bath after a hard day, but I also think come summer, the bathroom will be giving me all the Moroccan vibes too. Time for a another look me thinks!
