20 Things About Me

It occurred to me whilst on my recent blog break that I write with old readers in mind; the ones who have been following my blog from the early days, like talking to old friends I guess (*waves*). But in fact, there are new readers here too and I thought an introduction was way overdue. Hello, new readers!

I’ve been tagged on Instagram in the past to share 20 Things About Me and never got round to it, so I thought I’d get my act together and share with you lovely lot too. I did write one of these posts a few years ago which you can read here, but for now, here’s the 2017 edit!

1. I work part-time in marketing at an independent cinema, and the rest of the time as a freelance writer and blogger. I love my jobs and haven’t dreaded a Monday for a long while. After years of not being happy at work, I appreciate how lucky I am.

2. The Mick Jagger and David Bowie Dancing on the Street video is my favourite music video of ALL time.

3. Home is Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire. A Valley town in the countryside close to Manchester, Bradford and Leeds. I’ve lived here for 7 years now and can’t imagine living anywhere else.

4. My partners in crime are my boyfriend of nearly 10 years and our 2-year-old Golden Retriever, Polly (named after PJ Harvey).

5. I’m 37 years old and happy that I’ve lived on this planet for as long as I have. I’m hoping for another 37 years more of the same.

6. I’ve got terrible handwriting. It’s embarrassingly bad. I have to really concentrate to write letters nowadays!

7. I have generalised anxiety disorder with a little social (and separation) anxiety thrown in for good measure. Some days it’s a struggle but most days I function as fully grown adult. I’m grateful for those days. And Bach Remedy spray too.

8. I play Roller Derby with the Halifax Bruising Banditas. In my last Things About Me list I said I wanted to give it a try, so I’m pleased to have now been skating for 2 years! This deserves a whole post in itself but it’s been a big saviour for me in terms of confidence, escapism, friendship and fitness.

9. I don’t drive. I was diagnosed with epilepsy as a teenager (15 years seizure free) and have never bothered to learn since. I’m hoping by this time next year we will have wheels so we can take Polly on coastal trips in the UK. I’d love to seek out all the lighthouses (as a child I wanted to be a lighthouse keeper – introvert from day one).

10. My Dad has Alzheimer’s. I have days when I can talk about it logically, and other days, like today, when it’s all a bit terrifying and sad, and so, so unfair. Let’s leave it at that for now.

11. Getting a dog completely changed my life and the happiest parts of my day are walking Polly in the countryside we live in. To raise money for Alzheimer’s we completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge this year, and can’t wait for more hiking challenges in years to come.

12. I have the mouth of a sailor.

13. I love stargazing and reminding myself how very small we are in the grand scheme of things. Life is short.

14. As I get older, the more I’m getting into fashion. It’s liberating getting to an age where I’m happy in my own skin and being able to wear what I like. As a youth I was too insecure and spent my money on music and films (VHS!) instead.

15. I can’t list all my favourite films (we’d be here all day) but here’s a handful that I can watch in any mood; Withnail and I, It’s a Wonderful Life, Rear Window, Dirty Dancing, and A Very Long Engagement (the characters Mathilde and Manech were the inspiration to my blog).

16. Autumn is my favourite season in the UK.

17. PJ Harvey, Kate Bush and Patti Smith are my heroes.

18. I’d like to write more; plays, short stories, novels. Not necessarily to publish, I just need to learn a way to fit creative writing into my everyday.

19. I’m a terrible swimmer but I love the water. You’ll always find me in the sea on holiday!

20. I hate making phone calls. Work wise, I’m professional and just get on with it (followed by a big mug of comforting tea) but personally, I will choose to email, whatsapp or text. I love this digital age we live in.
