Travel: The Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh

Just after the New Year I went to Edinburgh with my chum Julia to celebrate her birthday, for a change of scenery and to stretch our legs (burning off those Christmas mince pies) in a city she used to study in. I’ve been to the city a handful of times before but this time I was looking forward to experiencing some of the culture Edinburgh has to offer; namely the museums, art galleries and historical monuments. It’s the only thing I miss about living in a city; the open space of galleries, museums and venues that offer a little respite from the hub of the city.

One of those places (and my favourite part of the trip) was the Royal Botanic Gardens located only one mile from the city centre, roughly a 30 minute walk via the beautiful area of Stockbridge. It was the perfect New Year pick-me-up for sure and I wholeheartedly recommend a visit here when you’re next in Edinburgh.

Those few hours spent walking, sitting, taking photographs and sketching (Julia drew to her heart’s content) were the most memorable of the trip. Plus if you’re going in winter you can warm yourself up in the Glasshouses. We could all do with a taste of the tropics right now, right?

The Gardens (FREE) and Glasshouses (£5.50) open from 10am. If you need some energy before your visit begins you could either try breakfast at the many cafes in Stockbridge beforehand or like us, have breakfast (and great coffee) at the Gateway Restaurant/Terrace Cafe in the Gardens. I had pancakes, and a healthy serving of maple syrup too. Disco.

Have you ever been to the Royal Botanic Gardens?
