Just Pinned: 10 Small Bathroom Ideas

The time has come to think about decorating our bathroom. Duh-duh-duhhh! I usually opt for the easier option of updating a space with accessories, plants or lighting (anything for an easy life). But the shower is past its best with its horrible plastic basin that’s not fitted properly, our walls need a paint or tile update and the vinyl flooring needs a good telling off. Although I’d prefer a free-standing tub, it’s not a necessity, and the bathroom suite is fine as it is. So, I’m hoping with a little Pinterest research we might be able to afford our very own bathroom update. How very grown up.

Our bathroom is on the small side which I like to see as an opportunity. It means the work shouldn’t take as long, and we might be able to afford a little luxury in the details too. I’m hoping we might be able to fit a wet room at one side of the bathroom (the previous owners created a shower there in a once store cupboard) and if I can convince the OH of this, then we can have some scrummy flooring tiles too. But steady as she goes and all that jazz…

If like me, you have a small bathroom that’s worthy of an update here are 10 design and space saving tips to help you along your way:

1| Clear the clutter. What do you use in the bathroom? Do you plaster your makeup on in there? If not, transfer any beauty accessories to the bedroom and simply keep your toiletries and towels only in here. Or perhaps clean towels can be stored elsewhere?

2| Add shelving above the toilet to store loo roll, towels, and toiletries similar to HomeTalk (bottom right image). Try these contemporary baskets to store your essentials in and display on the shelves. They will keep the clutter at bay, and make your bathroom look stylish too.

3| The one thing I won’t be changing in our bathroom is the LED lights, not only are they energy-efficient but the spotlights create a modern feel and as soon as we sort the dimmer switch (adds to list) they’re perfect for creating a cosy glow in the evening too. Having said that I do love the feature wall light in the top right image via Our Sixth House. You could style the shade with decorative light bulbs to add personality and charm.

4| The clever use of reflective materials such as mirror and glass in this bathroom (top middle image) via LagerLings helps to open up the space and make it look bigger; perfectly coupled with its cool and bright interior. I love the gold accessories too.

5| If you’re looking for a bigger project, perhaps adding an en-suite bathroom to your home, then a great way to maximise the space and light is by adding a skylight. Not only will it open up the bathroom, it’s great for privacy (and stargazing) too. If you already have a skylight, try updating the blinds instead; these Duette shades from Luxaflex are a great match for a skylight that will softly filter light and help keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

6| Use the door as an extra storage area. Add towel rails behind the door and shelving above it too. And don’t forget the door itself. Does it need an decor update? These simple details might make all the difference. I love these two-tone towels from Cox and Cox, perfect to have out on show!

7| Go bold with colour. Have you always wanted to incorporate colour into your home? A small room might be just the place to start. Try darker colours for a luxurious touch, adding dimension and drama. Or opt for a bold and bright colour scheme to energise the space, and your morning routine.

8| Invest in high-end accessories like Kate La Vie. If you don’t need to revamp the entire bathroom suite then indulge in a little everyday luxury from over sized shower heads (on my list!) to a bottle of your favourite hand wash,

9| Look to wall mounted or pedestal sinks rather than fitted, and bulkier suites. I especially love this wall mounted wooden shelf and Belfast sink found via Daniella Witte. 

10| Accessorise with plants. Sit them on shelves with leaves trailing down to soften and add texture or hang them from the ceilings using macrame hanging planters. P.S I think I add this tip to all my decor posts…I LOVE PLANTS!
