Simple Home Updates: 10 Ways to Style a Sideboard 

Sideboards have to be one of the most versatile items of furniture you can have in your home, as they are both ideal for storage and display. Originally used in the dining room to serve food and displaying your finest silver, they’re now a modern classic with timeless appeal, suitable for any room in the house

Our office sideboard, which has turned into another place to dump office items (all my own doing), is the next project on our Simple Home Updates list.  The idea of Simple Home Updates is to focus on small projects in the home that require little effort and budget;

Instead of painting walls, ripping up carpets and starting from scratch, it’s the small spaces within a room that have really changed a space, and my relationship with it. If it takes a couple of hours rather than a weekend or more, I’m in. From styling a bedside table, using baskets at the end of the bed for storage, or simply updating the bedding; by focusing on smaller but well used areas of your room instead of the whole space, DIY becomes less of a chore on your time and wallet.

So, how do you style a sideboard and update a room in an hour or less? Here’s 10 tips to get you (and me) started…

1| Add personality to your space. Use the surface to display your hobbies or passions and bring your artwork, collectables and sculptures to life.

2| Use the space to create seasonal displays. Autumn is just about here and there will be lots of colourful foliage to be found. Stack books to display collectables, vases and objects at different heights.

3| Add large artwork above the sideboard, either hung on the wall or placed on the sideboard itself. This helps to create a focal point in the room

4| Add symmetry to your space by styling your sideboard with objects on either side. Use lamps or larger ornaments to create a dramatic and balanced display.

5| Use the space as a specific area. A drinks display, home to your favourite cocktail ingredients perhaps? Or a space to host your music collection and record player?

6| Add shelving above the sideboard and keep any breakables away from the kids and pets.

7| Group together objects of the same colour on one side of the sideboard or in the centre to create a unique display.

8| Layer artwork to create a personalised backdrop to a large bouquet of flowers (as pictured top right).

9| Use it as it were intended! To store cutlery, tableware and serve food. At special occasions, use the space above it to create a party-themed decor with banners and balloons.

10| Bring texture to your space and give your room a botanical feel by using the sideboard as a home to your plants. Add them on the surface, and on the floor on one side of the sideboard. Perhaps balance this with a large floor lamp on the other side.

Now I just need to stop writing about it and cracking on with my plans!
