Just Pinned: Garden Style

It’s no secret that I love the colour black. In my wardrobe, in my home and on Pinterest, where I found today’s blog post inspiration.

There’s something compelling about a colour that can make a space look cool, contemporary and luxurious all at the same time. And you needn’t worry if you’re a lover of bright or pastel hues. Textures, patterns and colours are all transformed simply by putting them next to a black backdrop.

Whilst tidying up our garden recently I thought I might look for inspiration to give our outdoor space a bit more impact, by adding the colour black. We’ve already got black planters and window boxes, a black front door and gate but there’s definitely more that can be done. And as it’s such a small space, I’m hoping it won’t take too much effort. Always the lazy one. Ahem.

Fence/Decking| If you’re looking for a quick and modern garden update, why not paint fences or flooring black. Greenery will pop against this backdrop and immediately transform your outdoor space, with minimal effort.

Shed| If you’re lucky enough to have storage space to store your garden essentials use it as a focal point for your garden makeover.

Tools| You can find some pretty stylish garden tools nowadays (hello Orla Kiely) so if you’re looking to inject some colour to your black exterior, then this would be a good place to start. You can lock up your not-so-pretty lawn mower, strimmer and such (great bargains from SGS Engineering by the way) all in your newly painted shed.

Log store| Our next project is to add a log store to our patio and, you guessed it, paint it black to match our planters and window boxes. I love the one featured above, it really makes the logs stand out, making them a feature of the outdoor space.

Accessories| If you rent your property and don’t have the option to paint the fence or furniture then look to adding accessories like cushions, throws, lanterns and rugs. You might already have these in your interior?

Doors/Windowsills| Before we approach the cooler months now is a good time to update the colour of your front or back door and windowsills. Maybe change the door knocker too?

Planters| Add black planters made up of different textures (ceramic, metal or plastic) to give your plants a new lease of life. Green and black look so good paired together!

Furniture| Look in charity shops for anything that can be easily upcycled. Look on a Saturday morning so you finish the project by the end of the weekend rather than it being stuck in shed for the rest of the year.

Lighting| As well as improving security to your space, adding decorative lighting will help create a finished look to your outdoor area.

Plants| Find plants with dark foliage or dark flowers to create striking bedding displays. Mixing with contrasting dark green ferns would create lots of drama in your borders!

Fancy adding more black to your outdoor space?
