7 Ways to Improve Your Home Instead of Moving House

I have a friend, who for the last several years, has been wanting to move to a larger property in the same town she currently lives in. The search for her next home has been a stressful one so, after a lot of thought, she’s made the bold move to stay where she is and put the money she’s saved for her new home back into the house she currently lives in.

The location of the property was never the issue, it was more about the space and the time she’d need to invest back into her current home that made her want to move. However four years on her job and lifestyle changed giving her more freedom; and with no new property on the cards, the prospect of starting again in her current home seemed more appealing, and much less stressful.

I LOVE this idea. If you’re looking to update your current home (beyond basic DIY) instead of moving house here’s 7 suggestions to maximise the space so you can transform your house into a home that works for you.

Ask for feedback | Have friends and family visit and ask them what they love about your home and what home improvements could be made (utilise their DIY skills too in return for yours). Also ask to visit your neighbours properties which have similar layouts; great for inspiration!

Improve the exterior of your house | A simple makeover to the exterior of your home will not only add curb appeal but will make your home feel new all over again. Try painting your front door a different colour or update the exterior of your house.

Install bi-folding aluminium doors | Create extra space and bring the outdoors in by installing bi-folding aluminum doors. These doors are fantastic if you’re living space is lacking in light, and a great idea if you have pets/children so the whole floor is open for all to enjoy.

Think about having an energy-efficient home | If you’re going to spend money updating your current home, why not look into installing renewable energy technologies (solar panels) or start small with loft insulation and energy-efficient lighting. Not only will you save energy, but you’ll lower your household bills too.

Convert loft/cellar space | Obviously this only counts if you have these extra rooms (and a big budget). If you do, and currently use them as storage spaces, why not convert them into useable rooms. You can use a converted loft space as an extra bedroom or the cellar as a utility/wine space (my dream!).

Overhaul the most used rooms | We spend most of our time in either the kitchen or bathroom so it makes sense to decorate these first. If your kitchen and bathroom are on the small side like ours use this to your advantage and invest in high end fittings for a luxury feel but on a smaller scale. Parquet floors anyone?

Knock down existing walls | Not everyone likes open plan living but if you’re looking to create extra space and transform a room, knocking through non-structural walls will work wonders. Not only does it encourage natural light into the space but open plan living is great for entertaining and encouraging chit-chat between the members of the household!

It’s not about making do in your current home, instead it’s a great lesson in learning to love what we need and making the very most of every single inch.

Rather than dreaming of the next house, have you considering updating your home instead?

The article is brilliant, the ideas really original! I love it! Many people move house because of hating the location or because they decided to buy a house of their own… many do it because they don’t like the interior or the build up of the house the rent. I was in a situation like this and I moved out… I agree that if you have the money and a permission the best option is to decorate, renovate … freshen of the place and turn it into the home you want it to be! Thank you for sharing these ideas! They are really interesting and creative! Greetings, Emily!
