For UK folks, the next bank holiday weekend is only three weeks away. I know this because I circle every bank holiday in my calendar with a bright pink neon highlighter. TWICE.

Most of this coming holiday will be spent indoors so we can crack on with small jobs around the house in time for the next season (and cover up any puppy damage!); so I’ve sought inspiration from my friends over at Homesense, the sister company to TK Maxx, offering up to 60% off branded homeware all year round.

If you’re partial to a bit of DIY or are looking to update your home, as a renter or home owner, here’s 5 tips to help you make the most of your time and budget this August bank holiday.

Storage | If you’re looking to have a sort out before the car boot season finishes why not invest in some practical and stylish storage for the bits and pieces you keep. Simply sorting out unwanted goods, tidying a room and storing away makes a massive difference, at little expense. You can even make a penny or two if you sell some of your wares.

Colour | Give your space a boost of personality by adding bright hues to a room using textiles, furniture, art or accessories. Use one piece as a start point, like the Tall Zig Zag Vase above, then choose a colour from the design to decorate the rest of the room with. If you get bored with the colour in a couple of years, swap to a different colour (featured in the vase) for an instant and easy update.

Statement Furniture | None of us can afford to overhaul our furniture all in one go (no one I know anyway!) but gradually adding a piece at a time can change your opinion of a room, dramatically. Try changing the layout too as you add new pieces of furniture to a room. I love the bright red wicker chair above, great for brightening up corners.

House Plants | Bank holidays were made for trips to the garden centre and one of the quickest ways to update a room on a budget is to add house plants. Not only do they have health benefits, but they soften rooms with bulky furniture and emphasise areas that might ordinarily be overlooked. Look to your floors, surfaces and walls and try different sized planters of all shapes, sizes and colours. P.S If you’re worried about your pets, try a faux plant like the one above.

Scent | Coffee, cake and slow cooked meals left in the oven all day make a BIG difference in turning your house into a home. So maybe this bank holiday, have a day of baking, eating and relaxing!

Have you started making bank holiday plans?

My goal this year is to keep a houseplant alive! I’ve become apt at taking and repotting the babies of my houseplants, but they’re thriving outside whilst the ones I left inside are, I’m sorry to say, a tad crispy. Oops.
