10 Ways To Transform Your Home

We’ve been putting off moving for a year or so now, mainly because we have great landlords and the thought of moving house makes me feel physically ill – I’m not good at upping sticks, folks. Yes, I would love a spare room, private garden, bigger kitchen and a wood burning stove to cosy up to, but buying our own house isn’t a viable option and who knows if it ever will be. Moving to another rented property just for the sake of a little more space seems silly so instead, I tend to think about all the good things our little house has going on. Overlooking Hebden Bridge, it’s location is perfect and is situated in a secluded quiet spot that benefits from sunshine all day long and is only minutes from town. It has 4 cosy and homely rooms, all of which are manageable to keep up to (well, kind of) and we have great landlords who basically don’t ever bother us until we bother them.

So until we earn a few more pennies, I’m inclined to make our home work better for us now and enjoy it for what it is. If you’re in the same position and not able to move from your home (rented or not) here are 10 achievable and affordable changes which you can make to transform it from a house into a home worth living in.

  • Declutter. Before redecorating or buying new things for your home, it’s really important to sort through what you do have. Sort one room at a time, and invest in storage boxes!
  • Paint your front door and outdoor windowsills for an instant makeover in very little time. Add a few friendly plants either side of it.
  • Accessorise with textiles in your home to create a new look. A new rug and complimenting curtains can change a look and feel of a room in a matter of minutes. Tip! Add cushions and throws to give a room texture and warmth.
  • Fill the house with plants. If you don’t have any or much outdoor space, bring the outdoors in. I do like a nice house plant or three.
  • Change one wall in a room and make a feature with pictures, mirrors or wallpaper. Scour the charity shops for interesting and eclectic picture frames.
  • Add decorative, architectural or ornamental mouldings to create a professional finish to your walls and doors.
  • Paint the kitchen units a new colour or give them a fresh coat of paint then change the cupboard knobs. A great weekend project!
  • Revamp your furniture. Staining, stripping and painting – oh the fun that could be had, if you like to get messy! There are some great upholstery tutorials on Pinterest to get you started.
  • Want to update your kitchen or bathroom? Try replacing plumbing fixtures instead of a full counter top or new bath suite. I do like a nice Victorian tap, indeed I do.
  • Thoughtful storage. Add shelves above door frames or make use of free-standing shelves to separate spaces in open plan rooms. Use attractive storage boxes to add books or DVDs then use them as coffee tables – rattan boxes are good for this.

I think storage boxes are needed here (in the bedroom and in the living room) and am still trying to find the perfect nautical but not too nautical cushion covers for our living room! And matching runner and seat pads for our dining room. And get some white paint to brighten up the dining table and chairs! It will be done (but maybe not until next Spring -eek)

I agree with you that revamping the furniture is a quick way to transform your living space. (And much cheaper than buying new)! I have seen the trend of not only re-upholstering furniture but also painting upholstery.
