At Home: Retro Style In The Home

This week on the blog I’ve been focusing a lot on the home and how the littlest (and affordable) changes can make all the difference. Today I thought I’d take a peek into the world of retro inspired homewares and how they can give a home character and contemporary appeal, even if they are inspired by an era gone by.

Retro Homewares

There’s nothing better than finding a mid-century modern piece of furniture or retro piece of loveliness at a charity shop or fair but it is becoming practically impossible to find these gems anymore, without paying a silly price.  So it does make me happy (gleeful more like) to see retro inspired homewares and furniture on the high street and online, it really does. It’s a design I adore, which I haven’t tired of, mainly because only a small handful of my friends like the look (I know, cuhrazy!), so I don’t see it in people’s home a lot. The blogging and twitter community? Well, that’s another story – you’re all just so cool.

I would bite my own arm off would very much like to own a few pieces of mid-century modern furniture, new or genuine, but we live in a small house full of carpets, which doesn’t accommodate this look – the house already has a 70s gas fire, folks. In the meantime I can dream of modern sofa’s like the one above living happily in a room with wooden floors and a little more space, just a little more. But oh, you can’t stop me from coveting retro inspired homewares and accessories. A tea towel here, vintage style kitchen scales there and a bold print lampshade up there – my appreciation for retro can know no bounds. You never know, I might stumble across the real deal one day again soon (prays to charity shop gods).

Do you own retro inspired furniture or do you scour the second-hand shops and fairs for the genuine article?

I love the Fish and Chips tea towel!
All I need to do now is convince the other half that £10 for a tea towel is a fair price… 🙂

We have a few real retro items in our house – we have an actual dark green trim phone (which still works!), a G-plan 1970’s TV cabinet, a G-plan style 1970’s coffee table (much like the Ikea one) and a 1953 fully-functioning jukebox complete with 1950’s and 1960’s records! x
