10 Things to do in and around Dunsborough, Western Australia

Dunsborough, WA 2

I thought I’d best make a start on the millions of pictures I have of our holiday to Western Australia – so here we we go! We stayed with family in the Margaret River region, in a little town by the sea called Dunsborough (south of Perth). It’s absolutely stunning and the weather was pretty special too – I won’t mention the temperature. We had a perfect balance of sight-seeing and relaxing and I’ve come home chilled, inspired and ready for the UK’s Spring…when it decides to arrive!

To give you an idea of what we got up to and what you could too if you’re ever in the region, here’s a 10 things to do in and around Dunsborough list but to be perfectly honest I could have just lived on the beach the whole time!

Dunsborough, WA

1. Galleries and shopping. There’s a plethora of galleries and independent shops in Dunsborough and nearby (Hebden Bridge by the sea). Even the wineries stock great design-led gifts including House of Cards winery which I really liked. The markets are great too, which is where my MIL bought me this delightful tote bag!

2. Take a walk to Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse and Whale Watching Point (in season September-November). Great for breath-taking views and wildlife watching.

3. Visit Simmo’s Ice Cream Parlour for a plethora of ice cream and sorbets. Tip – The resident Emu is scary and is very hungry! A great place for children.

4. Pick up Australia’s best  magazines, Frankie, Smith Journal and Peppermint and go for a coffee at Yallingup coffee shop.

5. Wineries – WA has over 150 wineries to discover. Swings and Roundabouts winery, in the Margaret River region not only is perfectly situated, it makes amazing wood-fired pizzas so crisp and light you could eat two. The fizz is pretty nice too (I’ve learnt so much about wine, can you tell?). Tip – they also have pretty tote bags to take away your booze in.

6. Take a picnic to Dunsborough beach. Probably my favourite part of the holiday was heading to the beaches of Dunsborough, Bunker Bay and Meelup. Dunsborough however, had a little pontoon off shore you could jump off if you dared. It took me almost 3 weeks but I did it!

7. Go to the beach in the evening and prance around taking pictures, chasing seagulls and drinking MadFish wine from Howard Park Winery. The sunsets and stars are beautiful in WA.

8.Visit The Pour House for the best burgers, craft beers and music in town. You can also play the Neighbours board game, if that’s your bag. Tip- Try the Beer Mussels. Darn lovely.

9. Take a day trip to Caversham Wildlife Park in Perth and you can stroke the Kangaroos and meet a very friendly Wombat (and his friends). They cracked me up when they laid on the floor like this – very David Brent.

10. Walk Busselton Jetty, the longest jetty in the Southern Hemisphere (2k long) If you’re brave you can jump from the jetty (My OH did!) or, like me, jump in the netted area a little closer to shore. Tip – it is much longer than you think – take water and sun cream.
